Raise the Green Flag

Tuesday was a day for celebrating at Parklands.  We raised our Green Flag and celebrated our Eco efforts.  A change of fixtures meant that we had to deal with the disappointment that Nottingham Forest footballer and ex student, Lewis McGugan could not attend to raise the flag.

Quick thinking led to an invite to Great Uncle Bulgaria!!  Our Eco Team mascot is a womble and we are all encouraged to be Eco Wombles and follow in the great womble's footsteps and look after our environment.

We were joined for the ceremony by representatives from Erewash Council, Wilsthorpe School, Westerman Homes (who kindly donated and erected the flag pole), and by staff past and present and governors and parents who have all been a part of our Eco schools journey.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!  KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

The Carbon Monster was very, very hungry.

Last week was Waste Week at Parklands.

On Monday, Mrs Meller read the Carbon Monster to the children in assembly.

On Tuesday, slips about Waste Week and a Waste Free Lunch were sent home in childrens' book bags as well as a paper bag to wrap sandwiches in.

On Wednesday, children put all the waste from their lunch in a big bag for the Carbon Monster to eat.  It was very very full.

On Thursday, children brought their sandwiches to school in a paper bag (which was recyclable and compostable), instead of using cling film or non bio-degradeable sandwich bags.  Some brought snacks in pots rather than individually wrapped fruits or biscuits.

On Friday, the Carbon Monster was very hungry.  Strange grumbling noises were heard around school and he went off to find his lunch elsewhere and has not been seen since!  GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH!!!

Well done Parklands.  Keep on trying to have a waste free lunch.  Don't forget to recycle what you can and why not compost your crusts?

Bird of the Day - Blue Tit

Another beautiful spring day and lots of lovely birds in the wildlife garden.
Bird of the Day was a Blue Tit with a male Blackbird in 2nd place.
Also spotted were woodpigeons, a starling and a pair of dunnocks under our scarecrow feeder.
Birds are all very busy now that spring is here - what do you think they are doing? If you know, tell me your answer when you see me at school. Until next time.....

Peregrine Falcons

I am delighted that the Nottingham Peregrines now have 4 eggs.  There is no news from the Derby falcons yet, although there was a rather foolhardy woodpigeon perched on the side of the scrape (nest) this morning!!!

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!! - Waste Week At Parklands

19th - 23rd March, 2012 is Waste week at Parklands Infant and Nursery School. You might be reading this because you've heard Mrs Mellor talking about the Carbon Monster in assembly, or you got a random  paper bag in your childs book bag with this blog address on it and you wondered what was going on.

First of all Welcome to the Parklands Eco Team Eco blog - this is where we record a lot of the exciting, eco friendly activities that happen at Parklands infant and Nursery school. As you can see we've been going for a while and we're really excited to have new readers pupils, parents, grandparents, carers - all are welcome.

Now to business!!

Waste Free Lunch - Thursday 22nd March
This week the children will be hearing the story of the Carbon monster, you can click on the link on the right to have a look at this brilliant book.

In the story George learns about his Carbon monster which grows and grows as it eats all the waste that George generates, by not recycling packaging, or leaving the lights on.

On Wednesday we are going to collect up all the rubbish that we generate in one lunchtime to see how much we get, how much we can compost, how much we can recycle and how much goes to landfill.

On Thursday we are going to try and have a waste free lunch, and we need everyone's help. The eco team are sending out paper bags to tell everyone about waste free lunch. the idea is you use the paper bags to keep your sandwiches fresh - rather than cling film. Because paper bags can be composted or recycled, and cling film is pretty much impossible to recycle and will always end up in landfill sites. So the paper bags generate less waste.

It doesn't have to be fancy, the simplest ideas work best. Anything you can do to reduce the amount of waste is an improvement, and talk to your mum, dad, son, daughter about waste week - work out what you can do together.

Ideas for Waste Free Lunch

  • Have an apple or satsuma rather than apple slices in a packet.
  • Wrap food in fabric rather than plastic - these nifty wrap'n'mat's are even better and ultimately cheaper than the paper bags. http://www.onyabags.co.uk/shop.php?crn=213
  • Only pack as much food as the lunch-eater will eat
  • Use a re-usable bottle for drinks, rather than a carton.
  • Instead of babybels and cheese strings which all have extra packaging, try cubing up some block cheese, or cutting out shapes with cookie cutters to make them more fun.
  • Instead of little packets or boxes of raisins, buy a big bag and put some in a reusable pot.
  • When the water bottle comes home half full at the end of the day - water the house plants rather than pouring it down the sink.
Here are some more links with handy hints on reducing your Carbon monster.

Waste Week at Parklands Ladies Pamper Evening - Friday 23rd March

Friends of Parklands (Parents who raise money for Parklands school) are holding a Ladies Pamper Evening this Friday and are on board with Waste week. Ladies bring your old beauty products, make-up that's out of date, old shampoo that didn't quite work out, that skin cream you couldn't live without that just sits in your bathroom cabinet....you can recycle all of these products courtesy of 'Origins' at the Ladies Pamper evening, AND you'll get a free sample of Origins products and possibly a voucher for a free mini-facial at the nearest Origins counter (Boots in Derby, John Lewis in Nottingham).

This sort of stuff  is often really hard to recycle, and often ends  up in landfill sites so why not have a clear out and get yourself a little treat into the bargain!!

Tickets are still available to buy for the pamper evening, it costs £3 which includes a complimentary glass of wine/soft drink upon arrival and chocolate fountain.  You can buy your tickets on the door - or better yet get one in advance from the family room at Parklands before and after school on Tuesday or Wednesday, and during the Parents Open morning this Thursday.

Thanks for reading.

Mrs Padley.

Eco Team Meeting Update

Hi everyone,

Got quite a bit of blog updating to do today so prepare for a lot of posts in one go. First of all an update on the Eco team meeting we held on Thursday 1st March. We started off with an update from the pupil members from their eco note books. Ash suggested we put up some more hooks for additional bird feeders to be attached in the wildlife garden. Mrs Hallows suggested that we might build a Bug hotel in the wildlife garden during Green Day Next term (Thursday 14th June is the planned date), and our newest member Mr Ellis thought he might be able to provide wood to build the frame - this is very exciting and we'll hopefully have more updates in the future.

World Book Day
As it was World book Day Mrs Mellor read us all a brilliant story called "The Carbon Monster", there is a link to it on this page on the right hand side under books if you want to have a look. We decided to theme our waste week activities around this story too - see our separate waste week blog entry for more info on this.

Wildlife Garden Update
We all made plans to build a bird hide in the wildlife garden so that all the children can watch the birds without disturbing them. Mrs Longmoor had brought a long a new feeder for the garden too.

Raising the Green Flag
Mrs Mellor told us about her plans to invite Lewis McGugan from Nottingham Forest football club to raise the green flag. And I am delighted to announce that he said yes. The flag will be raised on Tuesday 27th March at 3pm. The whole school and eco team will be there, and any parents who want to come early to school on that afternoon to watch are welcome to stand outside the playground fence.

Bird Box Camera
Unfortunately we still haven't been able to install our camera bird box, so Mrs Golding has arranged a link to view the Peregrine Falcons nesting at Nottingham Trent University, you can have a look too. By clicking on this link or the one on the right side of this blog. www.ntu.ac.u/ecoweb/biodiversity/falcons

 Hope you enjoyed the update.

Bird of the Day - Robin/Blackbird

The wildlife garden certainly is getting plenty of visitors lately - the two new seed feeders were both empty after one week!

Birds spotted were:
Pigeons x3
Long-Tailed Tit x2
Blackbird x2
Dunnock x2
and Bird of the Day by two votes to one was the Robin which was singing its lovely song for us, in second place was the blackbird which was scuttling around under our scarecrow.

If you have been watching the Nottingham peregrine falcons, you will see that Mrs Peregrine has started to lay eggs and sit on the nest - only a month until we should see some chicks! Here she is keeping her egg warm.

Until next time

Goldfinches

This morning, myself and 2 children from class 1 were VERY EXCITED to see two goldfinches flutter down and feed on the niger seed in the wildlife garden.  They are such pretty little birds.  This was such a privilege and testament to the children's fabulous behaviour.  Isn't that wonderful!  Well done Mrs Longmoor for introducing the feeder.

A very happy Mrs Golding

Garden Volunteer Morning

I would like to extend the most enormous thank you to all of the volunteers, large and small alike, who helped on Saturday 3rd March.  We could not have done it without you.  The raised octagonal beds are now ready for the planting/sowing of our butterfly plants and a lot of clearing up was done in the wildlife garden...... but not too much, of course.  We don't want to upset our little creature-friends!
